THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN

As the night deepens, anticipation builds.
Families moving through store aisles filled with magic, ghost and pumpkins decoration, in search for the perfect costume to impress their folks.
Meanwhile, spooking songs and horror movies are spread around like candies by the entertainment world – Immersing us deeper into what is to come.
All across the globe, denizens from all walks of life gather to celebrate this enchanting occasion.
Children’s giggles fill the air as they roam the streets hunting for sweets while grown-ups revel and party until daybreak.
Yet, away from most prying eyes, meticulous preparations are made.
Dark forces begin to move as the bounds of the spiritual realm slowly begin to fade.
From apple bobbing to the glow of jack-o’-lanterns, what hidden truths lie behind the celebration of Halloween?

Samhain

Masks, costumes and bonfires: these are some of the common trademarks of modern-day Halloween.
Truth is, it was already the case thousands of years ago.
At the time, Celtic druids would gather to commemorate the end of the Summer during a festival called Samhain.
Sah-win or sow-in was very important for the Celts, not only did it mark the transition between seasons, but also represented the passage from life to death.
People at the time believed the veil between the world of the living and dead was its thinnest on this day.
The cause? Many wandering spirits would roam the world seizing any unprepared soul on their way.
That’s where those costumes came in!
Locals started to don folkloric creatures’ masks and apparels to ward of those dark forces.

And we’re not talking about funny gathering like we got today, oh no;
These were real cleaning rituals to drive death away and purify the land from its presence.
In the meantime, druids would act as intermediaries to communicate with those ancestral spirits,
Going as far as offering divination and fortune-telling on their behalf.
However, over time, Celtic culture slowly began to feel the growing influence of Christianity.
And as paganism died out, Samhain not only survived but thrived.
So how did such a dark ritualistic pagan event manage to stand the test of time in a Christian world?

All Saint Days and Syncretism

May 13th 609, Pope Boniface IV established All Saints’ day.
A date where the virgin Mary and all the Martyrs would be celebrated.
Now what does it have to do with Samhain and Halloween, you ask?
Well, to facilitate the conversion of the Celtic locals the Church of Rome decided to do what it does best.
Syncretism.
What does it mean? Pope Gregory III moved All Saint Day on the 1st of November, right next to Samhain!
At the time, they also introduced All Souls’ Day on November 2nd, to commemorate all the faithful that departed.
Now, there was no ‘trick or treat’ during Samhain, right?
Well, it came from the Church.
According to the Roman Catholic Church, the deceased would spend some time in purgatory before reaching the heaven.
In order to speed up the process, faithful could pray and intercede for those departed.
So, during this Holiday, children would go door to door asking for what was called “Soul Mass Cakes”.
In exchange of those little small round cakes, the children would offer a prayer to the dead relative of the one who offered it.
However, people didn’t fully stop honoring the 31st of October, and began to call it “All Hallow’s Eve” which with time turned into “Halloween”.
Now, it seems the Roman Catholic Church played a crucial role into preserving this pagan tradition.
I mean, it’s not the first time they mixed pagan doctrines with Christian teachings.
Knowing that, was All Saint Days really created to honor Mary and the Martyrs?

Lemuria

Long before the rise of Christianity and its practices, the month of May held a grim connotation in Roman culture.
It was considered the month of the dead.
Folks didn’t joke about it; in fact, women getting married during this month were said to be cursed.
And, just like Samhain, Roman citizens believed vengeful spirits would roam the earth.
So, what did they do? They made Lemuria, a festival taking place on the 9th, 11th, and 13th of May, designed to appease these spirits.
See, the “Lemures” were believed to be relatives that hadn’t received a proper burial or hadn’t been appropriately honored.
To banish and send these spirits away, denizens would bring offerings to them.
But when did this all start?

Many historians believe it stemmed all the way back to the founding of Rome, when Romulus killed his brother Remus over a disagreement.

What about the church? Well, as you’ve probably guessed, they syncretized the whole thing and Boom – All Saints’ Day was born.

Now, there are some striking similarities between all those pagan beliefs.

Can spirits roam our world? Do the dead torment the living?

Are these all just some stupid superstitions, or is there more hidden behind the curtain?

You know Jack o’ Lantern, right?
But have you ever heard that he was known to be a man who got barred from hell itself?
The fact is, all the pumpkin carving people do today is in remembrance of his story.
Now, while most of the world invades department stores in search of the costume to impress their friends,
Did you know many around the world still celebrate the old Samhain?
Neopagans, Wiccans, and some New Agers put a lot of effort into commemorating this day.
In fact, you’ve got many testimonies from witches and warlocks telling us how this day is the most important of the year for them.
Some would even go and fast for days just to be ready to spend the whole night doing rituals and dark masses.
Don’t believe me?

And he is not the only one.
The father of modern-day Satanism literally said he was “happy” that people all over the world would consecrate a day to worship Satan…
For all these folks, the veil between the physical and spiritual world does get thinner, and devil worshippers do all they can to fulfill their demonic contracts.
But if we ignore all this “spiritual” talk, did you know Halloween is one of the days when crime rates skyrocket?
I mean, you can look it up for yourself.
There are plenty of studies on it.
Now, if even half of this is true,
Would God want us to get involved in such practices?
Leviticus 20:27, Deuteronomy 18:9, Ephesians 5:11.
Here are just a few verses to meditate on.
Dressing your kid up like Casper the friendly ghost to get some candies might seem innocent at first glance, but there are darker forces at hand behind this “innocent” pagan holiday.
The world seems eager to push it onto us.

So, what will you do? Risk openly flirting with the kingdom of darkness? Or stay true to the Lord and His way?
